How To Set A Workout Routine & Actually Stick To It
We've all got into health-kicks where we come up with a workout schedule and routine with all these goals and the confidence to see it through. Well, sometimes that confidence turns into 'okay I'll start tomorrow' or 'starting Monday'. Excuses are easy to come by and accept. I used to do the same thing until I found the schedule and routine that works for me.
I've tried all sorts of home workouts I found on Pinterest or TikTok, got an expensive membership to Orange Theory, tried body weight exercises, cardio, and joined a gym. There are so many options to get started on your fitness journey, but ultimately a simple and effective routine is the way to go. It's all about moving your body and not hating every second of it.
Set Goals
First and foremost, figure out your 'why'. Why do you want to workout? Do you want to lose or gain weight? Become stronger? Increase endurance? More importantly and beyond looks, it is important to figure out the reason behind your physical goals. Do you want to have more energy or become more confident? Do you need an outlet and time to yourself? Do you want to keep your body thriving and healthy? Whatever your why, remember that every time you start to second guess yourself and lose the motivation.
Start Slowly
The next step in creating your perfect workout routine is to start slowly. It is easy to get a burst of motivation and see your life completely changing the next day or next week or so on. But it's not realistic. Change takes time and easing into a new lifestyle will optimize your chances of success.
Write It Down
Writing down a schedule can motivate you and keep you accountable. It is important to go into a workout with at least an idea of what you want to accomplish. Working out in a public gym can be intimidating, so coming up with a plan beforehand will only help in navigating this unfamiliar space.
Get A Gym Buddy
Having someone along in your journey to motivate and support you can be super helpful. It is also a lot of fun to workout with a friend. No matter how experienced you or your gym buddy are, you can always learn from each other and try new things with someone there to check your form, spot you, or just cheer you on!
Celebrate The Little Wins
It's important to recognize the small wins. Even if you didn't workout as long or as hard as you had wanted, you still showed up and that should be celebrated. Also remember that it is okay to have bad days. Not everyday will be easy and you won't stick to your routine all the time. Remember your 'why' and get back into it, a couple days off will not ruin your progress. Recognize when you need a break either physically or mentally and treat yourself to the day off and jump back into it when you're ready.
Working out doesn't have to be a dreadful task, it is possible to have a routine that you look forward to everyday and these steps above can help you put that together. You got this!
