Día De Los Muertos
The Day Of The Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrating those who have passed. Traditionally it is celebrated with food, drinks, offerendas (home alters), and gifts for those departed as they are able to reunite with us on this special day. It is celebrated from November 1st through the 2nd.
This was my family's first year participating in this tradition and it was so special. We had an offerenda for our loved ones who are no longer in our lives physically. We were able to share memories and honor them together. We all took turns sharing stories and laughing about those memories. It was an overall happy experience as it should be a celebration rather than a sad day. Of course with the happy memories, comes the sad realization that they are no longer here on Earth, so it is bittersweet. But I think it's important to remember those by talking about them and connecting with others who loved them as well.
For our dinner, we made tamales, vermicelli (pasta), Sopa Azteca (tortilla soup), and pan de muerto (bread of the dead). Our drinks were a mix of wine cocktails, margaritas, and other cocktails.
For dessert we skipped out on traditional Dia De Los Muertos options and instead chose mini pizookies and ice cream. We were also celebrating some birthdays and this was their choice of dessert.
Dia De Los Muertos is an important holiday and I am happy my family was able to gather and decided to begin this tradition of celebrating our loved ones who have passed. Feliz Día de los Muertos!
