October 2022 Reads & Reviews

It's spooky season! And what better way to get into the Halloween spirit than to read some thrilling books. Here is a recap of all the books I have read this month, mainly psychological thrillers for obvious reasons but also a sci-fi and romance.

The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose

This book is easily one of my favorite thrillers. The story was so intriguing from start to finish and kept me guessing until the end. This thriller deals with a complicated marriage made even more complicated when the husband is arrested for murdering his mistress, his wife is a top lawyer who represents him despite the obvious problems present. It is told from both the husband and wife's perspectives, switching back and forth and I really enjoyed this layout of the novel as many novels choose one narrator to tell their story, this book tells two perspectives of the same story and allows you to relate to both at different times. My rating for this book is an easy 5/5.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

I'm not one to typically read sci-fi novels, but this was the book of the month for my book club that one of my friends chose and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. The story was easy to get into, but I will say a little hard to grasp as it deals with philosophical questions, so I recommend taking your time with this one to give it your full attention. There were so many twist in the story that I never saw coming and it provided a unique look at a life that could be out there somewhere. This book was so fun to talk about at book club and having a community to ask questions and provide insight to made this so much more enjoyable, so I also strongly recommend starting a book club with your family or friends or even join some online. I would rate this book 4/5.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

I was so excited to read this novel and definitely happy I finally did. I have been waiting for a while to get my hands on this book and because of how long the hold was at my library, I knew it would be worth the wait. This story is such an interesting concept from beginning to end and kept my attention the entire time. It is about a normal married couple who had kids and live a typical life, but found themselves getting bored in their marriage. So they decide to become serial killers. If this doesn't catch your attention, I don't know what will. A well deserved rating of 4/5 from me.

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover has been all over my fyp on TikTok lately so I had to see what the hype is about. This is my first CoHo read and it did not disappoint! This romance novel provides a unique and in my opinion, a much needed insight into the complications some relationships experience. I was able to relate to the story quite a bit so I think that is another reason why I liked it so much. Beyond the main story, the book was an easy read that took me only two days because I was so into it. I think everyone should read this book and definitely don't skip out on the Author's Note at the end. This book is close to a 5 and I am excited to read the sequel!

Layla by Colleen Hoover

This book was honestly not what I thought it would be at all and I will try my best not to say any spoilers! I went into this book thinking it was going to be about a couple who are invloved in an accident, and the narrator, Leeds, meets another woman, Willow. Leeds has to choose who he wants to be with, and while all of that is true to some extent, I was not expecting exactly how this would happen. I think the story is really good and not expected. I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the others, so I would rate it a 3/5.

October was a good mix of spooky and fun book picks and I was happy with each book I read, some more than others of course, and I definitely hope you'll read at least one of these books soon!
